How to Clean Aluminum Wheels and Rims

HOW TO CLEAN ALUMINUM WHEELS AND RIMS

Aluminum wheels (also called alloy wheels) can shine like chrome when properly cared for. Regular cleaning prevents pitting, corrosion, and damage from brake dust and road grime, keeping your wheels looking their best.

Aluminum wheels come in a variety of finishes—bare, clear-coated, painted, powder-coated, or anodized. Most have a protective coating, but bare aluminum can corrode quickly without regular maintenance. Brake dust contains carbon fibers and metal shavings that can damage wheel surfaces over time, making frequent cleaning essential.

Garden hose or pressure washer
Soft-bristled brush or sponge
Microfiber cloth (optional)
Aluminum wheel polish and wax (optional)

Directions for Cleaning Aluminum Wheels and Rims

Only clean wheels when they are cool to avoid warping rotors or brake discs.

Start with the Wheels

Wheels are usually the dirtiest part of the car, so clean them first to prevent grime from splashing onto a clean vehicle.

Rinse One Wheel

Use a hose or pressure washer to remove loose dirt and brake dust from all crevices.

Apply Cleaner

Spray ADVANAGE the Wonder Cleaner® directly onto the wet wheel.

Scrub Gently

Use a soft-bristled brush or sponge to clean spokes, barrels, and around lug nuts. Keep the surface wet and do not let the cleaner dry.

Rinse Thoroughly

Wash away all cleaner and loosened grime.

Repeat

Repeat steps 2–5 for the remaining wheels.

Wash and Dry the Car

Wash the rest of the car per standard directions. Use a microfiber towel to dry the entire vehicle, including wheels, for a streak-free finish.

Optional: Polish and Wax

Finish aluminum wheels with a wheel polish and wax to maintain shine. Follow product instructions carefully.

Tips for Maintaining Aluminum Wheels

Rinse wheels with soap and water whenever you wash your car.
Deep clean every other month, or more often if buildup is visible.
Avoid cleaning over asphalt, which can cause pitting.
